1.1. Introduction
After 18 months of market rollouts, digital cellular and Personal Communications Services (PCS) providers have adequately demonstrated the power of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology to support a marketing strategy based on low prices and superior performance in key areas such as voice quality, system reliability, and handset battery life. According to the CDMA Development Group (CDG), the market base for IS-95 platform providers has grown from only 200,000 customers in 1997 to about 3.0 million in 1999.
