For obvious reasons, many of my friends and family call on me as their unofficial technical support when something goes wrong with their computers. Not a month goes by that I don’t have someone call me up about a computer that’s running slowly, or not at all. A cursory examination, followed by a few simple questions, typically confirms the usual suspect: The computer has been infected by a virus or spyware program. In most cases the computer can be cleaned and put back in good working condition, but it’s annoying to find so many computers being infected by those two things that are most easily guarded against.
