The Adult Learner

In the world of training, most design work takes place with adult learners. For training purposes, an adult is defined as someone who has either graduated from high school or has reached the age of 18. This is a subjective cutoff but seems to fit most training environments. There are also high school–aged learners who participate in training for jobs, to join the local volunteer fire department, and thousands of other scenarios, and they should be included in this population, too. The focus on adults in this chapter is intended to offer advice on working with this specific population, but remember that ISD works with any population of any age or variable.
