In the traditional and, some would argue, legacy world of learning, there has always been the assumption that the more valid forms of instruction are formal courses that contain evaluation of mastery. It has been argued that without the structure of a course environment, led by a facilitator and enhanced by traditional support materials like books, handouts, and other media, learning is at best haphazard and without any validity.
