Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft's latest server operating system, has come a long way from its ancestor, Windows NT. The first version of NT to be released was NT 3.1, in July 1993. NT 3.5 followed in September 1994, and NT 4 was released in July 1996. The current release of Microsoft's business class workstation is called Windows 7 and the server operating system is called Windows Server 2008 R2.
