During the past thirty years, the list of the largest corporations in the United States has changed dramatically. Some companies—Enron and WorldCom, for example—rose to the top and then imploded. Other companies, especially those among the U.S. automakers, have slipped down or off the list, while companies that no one had dreamed about when I first entered business, such as Amazon and Google, are at or near the top of the list.
