How Could You Not?

During the workshops at The Bank, I put two rows of pictures up on a 68-foot-long table. I change these pictures every day. I do this because I want people to learn to criticize. I emphasize that I “like this” or “don’t like this” is not a criticism—it’s an opinion.

Whatever criticism comes along, we should all be able to deal with it because art is not linear. Opinions differ and we should all be willing to be “wrong.”

There is one criticism, though, that leaves me speechless. That one goes something like this: “With all due respect, Jay, why did you take that picture?”

“Oh my God, I can’t answer that. If you don’t see why the picture was taken, there is no way to explain it.”
