“Research”

I was planning a shoot in Brazil. I knew I was going to Bahia, where I’d never been. I also knew that Art Kane, who was a terrific photographer, had been there.

I called Art and told him what I was doing, and that I was a little anxious and very excited and wondered if he had any advice for me.

His answer was a laugh, and I said, “What’s the joke?”

He just said, “Don’t worry about a thing, people will be sitting in windows waiting for you.”

Damn, they were.

In this photo, this young girl was one of many that waited in windows for me.

Bahia was an embarrassment of riches. It was a wonderful visual experience. It was kaleidoscopic, saturated color, pastel color, wonderful people and they were all there, as Art said, waiting for me.
