Nature versus Nurture

As baseball legends go, it’s hard to top Ted Williams. With keen vision, quick wrists, and a scientific approach to hitting, he set all sorts of amazing records despite missing nearly five full seasons due to military service (where he also received an impressive series of medals and decorations).1 He was the last player in the Major League with a season batting average over .400 (with a .406 in 1941) and, although he retired in 1960, he still holds the highest career batting average of anyone with five hundred or more home runs.
