16-bit fixed This is the standard fixed-point wordlength of the Compact Disc. 16 binary bits express a coded range of 96 dB, but with care and proper dithering, a 16- bit file can capture signals as low as −115 dB below full scale. The difference between floating point and fixed point notation is explained in more detail in Chapter 2.
