Planning a Layout from Scratch

Templates are a nifty way to learn by example, giving you a designed document to dissect and examine to figure out how it hangs together. But there’s still nothing like building your own layout from scratch to learn the principles and pitfalls of graphic design firsthand. The rest of this chapter gets you started on that process, taking you from blank page to lively layout. You’ll finish the job in the next chapter as you learn the details of working with objects. Here’s your assignment.

At long last, superhero outfitter Up & Away is launching its new real estate service, offering hidden-fortress sales and rental to heroes throughout the tri-state area. From stately manors to halls of justice to warehouse fixer-uppers, Up & Away aims to take the hassle out of finding your next secret headquarters. Likewise, Pages aims to take the hassle out of designing the catalog for your new service.

The catalog will be a magazine-style layout, with big splashy photos showcasing available properties along with their listing information. Brief articles scattered throughout will offer advice to heroic homebuyers, each accompanied by pictures and perhaps some charts or graphs showing local trends (sales of bat caves vs. arctic fortresses, for instance). You’ll need several different page types—the cover, a few layouts to feature individual properties, and a couple of options for article pages.
