While commonly categorized as a software development process, in reality, RUP is a process framework. One of the driving forces behind an adoption of RUP is to devise a customized development case, or RUP instance, that fits within an organization or development team. In fact, any attempt to adopt RUP “out of the box” is virtually futile because of its scope. In the attempt to define a process framework that is universally applicable, RUP provides a robust set of practices that must be carefully examined. Those aspects that are most pertinent to our team must be applied to our custom instance of RUP.
