Chapter 33. National Animal Identification System (NAIS)
The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a federally sponsored standard for tracking U.S. livestock, both domestic and imported. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently implementing it thru the United States by means of federal grants, mandates, and state laws. It is not mandatory yet.
The purpose of NAIS is to track the movement of livestock from importation or production thru processing. The goal is to be able to identify all premises on which the livestock is located so all animals that have had contact with a “disease of concern” within 48 hours of discovery.
