One of the strengths of the Joomla! system is the availability of a large number of extensions. You can find a Joomla! extension for just about any purpose you can imagine. An extension can be as simple as a plug-in that improves your search capability, or as complex as a complete e-commerce catalog management and shopping cart system. An extension may merely enhance existing functionality or it may add completely new functionality; extensions can also be purely aesthetic in the case of templates.
This chapter covers how to find extensions as well as how to install and uninstall them. In the last half of the chapter, I also look at some of the most popular extensions for Joomla! 3.
Finding Extensions
You can find Joomla! extensions in a number of locations, from the developers' websites to various extension directories. Two officially maintained directories are JoomlaCode and the Joomla! Extensions Directory; the Extensions Directory is the most popular and easiest to use source of Joomla! extensions. The directory was purpose-built by the Joomla! team to provide a listing of extensions that you can browse; it currently contains over 10,000 extensions that you can download and install on your Joomla! site. The Joomla! Extensions Directory is shown in Figure 22.1.
