Components are extensions that contain the largest pieces of content on your site and display in the main body of your web pages.

Large third-party extensions such as the K2 or Zoo content construction kits are components, as are social media extensions such as JomSocial, Community Builder, and EasyBlog. These will display in the Component menu when installed. Just like categories and articles, components can be tied to modules and must have a module or menu item associated with them if they are to display on the site.
