Kristina Hacker was determined to become an expert on blackouts.

For her first college newspaper reporting assignment, she was tasked with writing a story on a series of statewide electrical outages. “I spoke with numerous officials at the university and at the state level,” said Hacker, now top editor at California's Turlock Journal. “I read every news story written on the subject and was briefed by the local electrical company. I spent at least 20 hours researching and writing the 40-inch story. I proudly turned it in and waited for the praise to begin.”
