Establish a beat.

It is one of the best idea-generating and career-making moves a young journalist can make. A beat is a general or specific coverage area tackled by the same reporter, story after story after story.

Working the same beat for an established outlet or an independent website you create enables you to become a mini-expert about a small slice of our world. It gives your reporting a sense of identity and purpose. And it builds a knowledge and contacts base that will breed confidence and better journalism.
