“Katrina hit everybody.”

Matt Stamey uttered these words about the historic 2005 hurricane, still the costliest and one of the deadliest in U.S. history. At the time, as the chief photographer at a newspaper in Houma, La., about an hour from New Orleans, he calculated the enormity of Katrina's impact by the endless stream of Big Easy evacuees arriving in Houma—in some cases without the ones they loved.
