Chapter 11. Routing

This chapter will show you the Internet Protocol (IP) routing features of Junos for the SRX. IP routing is, very simply, the means by which IP packets are moved across IP networks. This is true whether the network is the global Internet or the smaller IP networks in businesses, schools, and homes.

The SRX is the first platform for which Juniper Networks brought its decade-long experience in IP security from the earlier ScreenOS platforms into the Junos operating system with its equally rich decade of IP routing experience.

Junos was the operating system built for mission-critical IP routing. Junos platforms are deployed at the core of the global Internet and many of the world’s largest enterprises. This chapter is not meant to replace the already excellent coverage of Junos’s extensive IP routing capabilities in O’Reilly’s earlier Junos Enterprise Routing by Doug Marschke and Harry Reynolds and Junos Cookbook by Aviva Garrett. The goal of this chapter is to offer a solid grounding for network professionals who are new to IP routing in the Junos operating system.

In this chapter you will find all that you’ll need to get IP routing up and running on your SRX device. This chapter has seven main sections touching all aspects of IP routing on the SRX:

  • How the SRX “routes” IP packets

  • Static routing

  • Dynamic routing

  • Internet peering

  • Routing policy

  • Routing instances

  • Filter-based forwarding

This chapter shows you how to configure IP routing with direct tutorials in the Junos command-line ...
