Not all mistakes or incidents are seen the same way. Some are considered worse than others. Not all mistakes, in other words, are equally "forgivable." But the case of the Boeing 747 missed approach in the previous chapter shows just how controversial this might be.
In this chapter, I look at one basic distinction that can be made in many professions: That between technical and normative errors. These are not types of errors that exist "out there" in the world. Rather, they are ways of constructing, or looking at and talking about, human performance.
