SCENARIO: Every New Year’s Day I make a list of resolutions I know I’ll fail to keep. I promise myself I’ll exercise every day. I promise myself I’ll stop acting like a shrew when my kids act up. And then there’s that resolution about going back to school to get my MBA. I feel disgusted when I look at my out-of-shape body in the mirror, guilty when I think about how I’m not living up to my career goals or my expectations as a parent, and frustrated by my mounting pile of broken promises to myself—but work and life keep getting in the way, and it’s so hard to follow through on my plans and goals.
