Emotional intelligence

It has been said that the most successful people are high in emotional intelligence (EQ), a combination of self-awareness, social awareness, self-discipline and the ability to relate to others socially.

The big picture

American psychologist Daniel Goleman combined two early models of emotional intelligence to create the best known version, which has four main components: self-awareness, social awareness, self-regulation and relationship management – see Figure 19.1.

Goleman adds motivation to these four key components. Anyone perceived as strong in these areas is said to have ‘high EQ’.
