Johari window
The big picture
The Johari window is a simple tool for understanding what we do and do not know about ourselves and what others do and do not know about us. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we constantly reveal aspects of ourselves to others, and we may also have hidden potential which is obvious neither to us nor to others. The Johari window, named after its originators, Joseph Luft (1916–2014) and Harry Ingham (1914–1995), is a communication model designed to build trust through self-disclosure and feedback from others. It is divided into four quadrants, each representing different combinations of what we and others know about us – see Figure 20.1.
