The big picture
The Toltecs of Southern Mexico were the cultural and intellectual predecessors of the Aztecs. The Toltec masters, known as naguals, were scientists and artists who wanted to conserve ancient wisdom. Naguals followed shamanistic practices of attaining altered states to communicate with a spirit world. Don Miguel Ruiz was a Mexican surgeon who, following a near-fatal car accident, trained as a nagual. According to Ruiz, we learn through a process of reward and punishment and, in time, begin to fear the punishment and fear the lack of reward.
