The Steel Trap Spreader
What the heck is a spreader, anyway? Basically, a spreader keeps the tripod’s feet where you want them, strengthening the whole shebang in the process. If you were going to buy a spreader it would run you anywhere from $50 up (more toward the up; cheap spreaders aren’t that great). You can make this one for less than $25. This spreader is designed for any tripod with spike feet, and is a perfect, if not necessary, companion to the Third Man tripod. Read the section, “Make It Groovy” at the end of this chapter.
