As the name suggests, a lab on chip is a microscopic chemical laboratory that implements chemical reactions, generally for biological sensing applications, in a microscopic environment.
By using small amount of reagents, the nature of the chemical processes that takes place in a lab on chip is not qualitatively different from those realized in macroscopic systems, except that chemical reactions frequently do not happen in mechanical equilibrium, but are realized while the fluid containing the reagents moves [1,2].
