Filtering is the process by which the frequency content of a signal is altered. It is one of the most commonly used signal processing techniques. Common everyday examples of filtering are the bass and treble controls on your stereo system. The bass control alters the low-frequency content of a signal, and the treble control alters the high-frequency content. By varying these controls, you are actually filtering the audio signal. Some other applications are for removing noise and performing decimation (lowpass filtering the signal and reducing the sampling rate).
