The finite-state machine associated with BGP is shown in Figure 11-15.

Other BGP literature describes states 1 through 6 only. States -1 (prefix exceeded) and 0 (administrative shutdown) are specific to the Cisco implementation. To avoid confusion with state numbers used in other literature, in this book these Cisco specific states are numbered -1 and 0, respectively.
