Ablation effects of femtosecond laser functionalization on surfaces

Abstract

In this chapter, the effects of femtosecond laser irradiation are reviewed. Interest in surface treatments using laser irradiation for the functionalization of materials has been generated in recent years. Indeed, it adds a significant value to standard materials such as industrial steel. This laser patterning method induces strong topographical effects: ablation and ripples zones are created. Additionally, chemical and microstructural changes can be observed: it has a significant impact on the concentration of oxides and other species.
