The Power of All Three at Work

When Edwin Hubble was born in 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri, the Milky Way was the only known galaxy within what was perceived as a static universe.1 The study of astronomy and cosmology was limited by the state of telescope technology and the prevailing ideas about space.

Edwin relished exploration and knowledge, leading him to earn undergraduate degrees in math and astronomy from the University of Chicago.2 A five-sport athlete, he played on the university’s championship basketball team in 1909 and passed up an opportunity to train for the world heavyweight boxing championship.3
