Avoid Insularity

This chapter tackles inclusiveness from a different angle. An institution that is open to people of all walks of life and reaches out to help people of all stripes, wherever they are, cannot be insular.

Over the years, the word insular has been associated with many large institutions for obvious reasons. In the case of the Catholic Church, its doctrine has not changed significantly over the centuries, and many use this as ammunition to accuse the Church of being out of touch. While Vatican II made strides toward making mass more appealing—such as no longer giving the liturgy in Latin and turning the altar toward the congregation—there were no fundamental changes in values that made the Church more accessible to outsiders. ...
