Ong Keng Yong has been secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since January 2003. ASEAN is a political and economic organization whose aim is to accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in its region and promote regional peace and stability. ASEAN's ten member nations—Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam—are home to more than 500 million people, comprise a total area of 4.5 million square kilometers, and have a combined gross domestic product of more than $700 billion and total annual trade of about $850 billion.
