INFORMED CHOICES

Let's review some of the prominent idea-generation techniques that can be used in either individual or group settings. Each technique has a different propensity for generating incremental or redefinitional ideas.

Brainstorming

Most people are familiar with brainstorming. However, many think that brainstorming is the same thing as chaos. It is not. There are rules to brainstorming, such as these:

• Generate a large number of ideas. Quantity is preferred over quality at this stage. Post or record all the ideas as you go, with no censoring or editing.

• Suspend judgment about ideas until the evaluation stage. Failure to follow this rule is the major reason some brainstorming sessions do not produce the needed results.
