Why Use a Team?

In a series of research studies (see sidebar), we saw that teams clearly made better selection decisions than individuals. In one study, we found that when a single person made the decision, the executive selected was ultimately viewed as successful in the position only a third of the time. When a team made the decision, the selected executive was viewed as successful more than half the time.

In another study, which employed a selection simulation in which there was a correct choice, teams chose the correct candidate almost three-quarters of the time, whereas individuals made the correct choice only half the time.
