Resilient People
Resilience can be defined in many ways (see sidebar). For the leader it is probably best defined in terms of the characteristics possessed by resilient people and organizations.
I recently did in-depth interviews with dozens of professional men and women who had involuntarily lost their jobs but who had ended up learning from the experience and feeling better off than they were before. This study confirmed for me what I had seen in the business press, management literature, and my own consulting experience. Resilient people, who can respond effectively to changes as they occur, share the following characteristics:
