It is often said that developing as a leader is a long and complex journey. Until recently in U.S. business, it was a trip that only white males had the opportunity to take. It is not surprising, then, that the leadership development programs that were created to help managers on their way have been largely based on, and directed to, the challenges encountered by members of this group.
