Stand up for yourself.
This next lesson confused us when we were kids. Do you remember being told by your parents to do what you were told? Then you came home from school upset because a bully was picking on little kids, and you thought you would be next. Your dad told you to stand up for yourself, but how do you do that in every situation and at the same time be polite and respectful? It’s not that these concepts are mutually exclusive; it’s just that the lines between them were blurred. The secret, Dad explained, is to stand up for yourself when you need to do so in a respectful and appropriate manner.
