8Strategies for Implementing the Leadership Pipeline Model
Implementing the Leadership Pipeline framework is usually not that challenging. The reason for this is that you already have a leadership pipeline! You have leaders‐of‐others, leaders‐of‐leaders, and so forth. In principle, you do not “implement” the Leadership Pipeline model per se in the organization. You apply the Leadership Pipeline model to describe already existing leadership roles within your organization. This description is what we call a Leadership Portrait.
From an implementation perspective you then also need to consider the following:
- Whether you should start with a partial implementation, or if you should immediately go for a full organizational implementation
- How to situate the Leadership Pipeline framework into your existing structures and models
After introducing the Leadership Portrait, we address these questions; at the end of the chapter and provide specific tips for effective implementation.
Designing Leadership Portraits
In Chapters 3 through 7, we outlined the job to be done and the required work values, time application, and skills for the different leadership roles. Combining these two elements gives us what we call the Leadership Portrait. In Figures 8.1 and 8.2 we've illustrated the Leadership Portrait for leaders‐of‐others.
