The Foundational Attribute

Trust is the bottom line. I believe it is the most important of the six elements. We may follow a leader who lacks farsightedness or wisdom if we sense that he or she is working to develop that attribute, but we hesitate to commit to any leader we can’t trust. When we commit to leaders, we are putting our fate—at least our work fate—in their hands. We must have faith that they will do their level best to tell us the truth, follow through on their commitments, and lead us with care and skill. In the words of Stephen M. R. Covey in his wonderful book The Speed of Trust, we need to trust their character and their competence.
