WHERE ARE WE, AND WHAT IS GOING ON?

Defining one’s positioning is key to ascertaining the events happening around when it comes to leadership. This is particularly the case for navigators. It is not a case of ‘leadership as position’, which is one way of describing leadership in Keith Grint’s (2005) very useful book titled Leadership: Limits and Possibilities. An individual may have a high position in an organisation, but this does not mean they are exercising leadership in the truest sense. To navigate as a leader is to first know where you are and what is going on around you. We offer an example here:
