Part of being a mentor is working with your staff to develop the type of work environment you want. Some people thrive on conflict. In a zero-sum worldview, if they didn’t win, they must have lost. And it’s true that organizations can be successful amidst considerable conflict. Many would point to Darwinian evolution as the model by which organizations should be run. My example of my previous boss Jerry fits this mold. For him, and the entire organization, yelling and arguing was simply par for the course. It was a nasty, cutthroat environment filled with political intrigue, ephemeral alliances, and sabotage. Many people loved that environment. But more people found it burned them out quickly. ...
