Significance

The drive up the mountain seemed longer. He didn’t mind. He was enjoying the fall colors. When he finally arrived, he walked up the familiar path.

He was surprised, troubled when she opened the door. The gray in her hair and lines in her face had always been there. But not the first thing you noticed. Was she tired? Sick? Her face gave no other clue. Her eyes and her smile were as mysterious as ever.

She motioned him in. There’s hot coffee.

He thanked her. Notice the headline this morning? Another CEO fired over a sex scandal.

She nodded.

How can you have it all and still have nothing? he asked.
