CHAPTER 12Conveyance between stations

The conveyance system moves parts between stations in an assembly line. It should not be a WIP buffer, itshould notartificially separate subsequentstations, it should notlose productorientation, and itshould notbe shared among multiple conveyance tasks. The goalsforthe conveyance system include, forquality reasons, preserving theprocess sequence by moving one unitat a time infirst-in-first-outmode and by being unobtrusive, safe, and inexpensive.

Products that are small and light can simply be passed between operators’ hands. If synchronisation is too difficult, a one-piece buffer between stations is appropriate, but WIP accumulation beyond one unitshould beprevented. Forheavierproducts in low volume, pushcarts ...
