Few sectors are as dependent on teamwork as healthcare. Due to the highly specialized healthcare professionals—such as doctors, nurses, lab technicians, physiotherapists, pharmacists—patients sometimes have to deal with as many as 60 care providers during their treatment.
To coordinate the work of all these different people requires intensive collaboration. It is precisely this cooperation and the necessary coordination that is sometimes lacking during care processes. As a result, things easily go wrong especially at the transfer points between the various departments and disciplines. Leadership is needed to shape this collaboration and to let people function as a team. But then what is a team?
