Case Study: Successful Standardization through Job Instruction (JI)
In response to one of my columns (Orelio 2018) people from the Leiden University Hospital—LUMC—told me that unlike many other hospitals they meet little to no resistance when it comes to standardization. In their hospital they see enthusiasm. Enthusiasm for standardization? I could hardly believe it. In my experience standardization is one of the more controversial topics when you talk about continuous improvement, Lean healthcare, and its origins at Toyota. People quickly think that standardization kills creativity and the idea is that you have to do your work for patients like robots on an assembly line. Nothing could be further from the truth as LUMC proves.
