Understanding left- or right-handed coordinate systems

While a good understanding of 3D math will certainly be helpful, it isn't entirely essential. All you need to know, for now, is that we define an object in three dimensions (hence, 3D) using a common notation of x, y, and z, where x is the position along the x axis, y along y axis, and z along z axis. Furthermore, we define the position of these axes using a term called left-handed or right-handed coordinate system, as shown in the following diagram:
