16MECHANICS IN THREE DIMENSIONS

Image

To predict the motion of a projectile, a satellite, or any object that can move unconstrained through three-dimensional space, we need to use three-dimensional vectors to describe velocity, acceleration, and force. In this chapter, we’ll merge the three-dimensional vectors we described in Chapter 10 with the state-based solution techniques of Chapter 15.

Describing the state of an object or particle remains central to our task of predicting its future motion. We’ll develop an appropriate set of state variables for a particle in three dimensions and define a new type called ParticleState to hold them.
