In this chapter we’ll begin exploring Faraday and Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory, which broke from Coulomb’s particle-based ideas by introducing the notion of a field. The Faraday-Maxwell theory is the best theory we have for explaining electrical, magnetic, and optical phenomena. As a field theory, the Faraday-Maxwell theory supported the locality ideas of relativity 40 years before Einstein wrote about it, served as an inspiration for other field theories like general relativity, and became the prototype for contemporary gauge field theories of particle physics.
