Appendix A. The Web API and Blocks SDK for Nondevelopers

We covered many topics to help you use Airtable as an integrated no-code system for storing, sharing, and analyzing your data. You should now understand how to set up and import data into your base, write and use formulas, make the most of tools like Automations and Interfaces, and extend your Airtable base with third-party connectors and app builders.

However, Airtable’s full capabilities go beyond what you can accomplish independently as a user with little to no coding experience. And if you’re not a developer but are working with a developer, you should know it’s possible to extend your Airtable base using the Airtable Web API and the Blocks SDK.

If you’re developer, the concepts here will be familiar to you already. Airtable has a site for developer docs.

In this chapter, we’ll take a brief conceptual overview of these two components of the Airtable universe and what they can offer when leveraged by a developer. This isn’t meant to be a full introduction for someone planning to write code and use the Web API or Blocks SDK directly; far from it. It’s an opportunity for a nondeveloper to get more familiar with what these tools are so they can work with developers on creating custom tools for their Airtable bases.

Let’s review some terminology and concepts you’ll need to understand.
