In this section, we'll explore considerations for placing your Ceph servers, especially as regards to failure domains, a topic that we'll discuss in greater detail in Chapter 8, Ceph Architecture: Under the Hood.
Small to modest Ceph clusters may not comprise enough servers to fill multiple datacenter racks, especially with today's dense 1U and 2U chassis. For these there are two classes of layout strategies:
